Instilling awe and wonder for learning
Here in the Infant Department, we aim to give the children an excellent educational platform for their learning by exploring topics that inspire their interests and encourage them to want to find out more. Laying down this solid foundation allows the children to grow as independent learners and build the confidence to have a go and persevere before progressing to Juniors.
We entrust the children with responsibilities both in the classroom and out in the playground; Year Two children can take on the role of ‘Playground Friends’, demonstrating their care for those around them. We build up the children’s social skills by encouraging them to be good listeners, to negotiate with others, to work and play co-operatively and to respect others.
Curriculum
Maximising potential and understanding
We implement the Read Write Inc. This is a Phonics program with three weekly one-hour sessions, enhancing phonic knowledge, reading, spelling, comprehension, and writing. Regular assessments group children by level for comprehensive learning.
This knowledge informs individualised teaching, promoting curriculum confidence. Our Abacus math scheme continually assesses to pinpoint teaching focus for maximum progress. This builds self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses, guiding skill improvement.
Our core subject for years 1 & 2 include:
Mathematics
KS1 follow the White Rose Maths scheme, this ensures a clear progression of skills with a particular focus on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.
Our Maths curriculum encompasses a range of practical tasks and manipulatives, supporting children's visual understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts. The children develop a love of numbers and have many opportunities within the curriculum to apply their maths skills to a range of situations e.g. Science activities and investigations, Enterprise Day – where each year group makes a product to market and sell to the school and parents and Children’s Summer Fair – where each class runs a fun stall. All opportunities help to set the stage for a lifetime of mathematical curiosity and competence.
English
In Key Stage 1 English is taught through Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar activities and focused Reading and Phonics, where the children use their skills and knowledge applying these to their writing.
Using a holistic approach, we ensure English includes drama, discussions and writing through the children’s focused Topics. In Year 2, the children access our Accelerated Reader Programme, which gives children a personalised age-appropriate score directing them to books which match their current reading ability, whilst exposing them to a plethora of new, relevant vocabulary. Throughout KS1 children continue to develop their love of reading for pleasure, writing for a purpose and creative expression.
History
In Key Stage 1, Humanities, History, and Geography are explored through engaging Topics. Each term, a big question guides the learning journey, fostering cross-curricular connections.
Year 1 delves into the evolution of our world, examining past toys, the dinosaurs' era, and significant journeys. Year 2 begins with the Ancient Greeks, embracing their contributions, Olympic Games, democracy, and mythology. They then explore castles, the Great Fire of London, and the local history of Plymouth and the seaside. These immersive experiences enhance historical and geographical knowledge, fostering a love for learning.
Forest School
Our enhanced Forest School area caters to every year group, offering a child-led outdoor experience.
Weekly outdoor time is a cherished aspect of the King's School experience, especially for older students, providing a refreshing break during 11+, SATs, and the transition to secondary education. Our Forest School program aligns with our Learning Outside the Classroom Award, Woodland Trust awards, and our school's Eco-Warriors and Gardening Club. Students build relationships, discover their abilities, and self-regulate while participating in activities like using tools, fire lighting, imaginative play, and more. These experiences contribute positively to academic achievement.
Science
Science is a real highlight for KS1, our curriculum delivers practical, engaging learning which is accessible to all.
In KS1, children begin to develop the skills that will support their science journey through to Year 6 and beyond, with a focus on Scientific Enquiry and Working Scientifically. The children use fair testing, pattern seeking, research, problem-solving, grouping and classifying, and observation over time to investigate a range of exciting topics. Our children are always keen to share their knowledge and learning. We also offer STEAM Club, where enquiry, critical thinking and the love of Science is continued.
Specialist Subjects
In KS1, specialist teachers enhance the curriculum by instructing Dance, Music, Spanish, and ICT.
These classes kindle a deeper passion for these subjects and occur regularly, enriching students' learning experience. Collaborations with Plymouth Argyle Football Club and Plymouth City Patriots basketball team introduce specialised P.E instructors. Music lessons align with classroom topics, such as songs related to Black History Month and Remembrance Day. ICT adapts to future technological needs, including robot use and presentation skills. Spanish lessons lay the foundation for further language learning at King's. This comprehensive approach broadens students' knowledge and skills.
